19th Century Grodnertal Tuck Comb Wooden Doll – Hand-Painted Peg Wooden Doll An authentic 19th century Grodnertal wooden doll, featuring the distinctive painted tuck comb hairstyle, one of the hallmarks of these early peg wooden dolls. Carved in the Grodnertal region of Germany and exported throughout Europe during the 19th century, these dolls are prized today as both toys and folk art. This example has a hand-painted face with blue eyes and red lips, with traces of the original painted tuck comb visible at the crown of the head. The torso and upper limbs are painted in deep brown, with paler lower limbs and black painted shoes. Its carving is simple and slightly primitive, showing the individuality of handcraftsmanship and adding to its character and charm. With jointed shoulders and hips, the doll can sit and pose, just as it would have been enjoyed by a child in the 19th century.
