Antique Celluloid Plum Tape Measure with Fly PullA wonderfully unusual antique novelty tape measure modelled as a ripe plum and made from hard, rigid moulded celluloid. It is coloured in deep aubergine and purple tones, with a contrasting yellow-green leaf and curved stalk. A small applied fly forms the pull for the original woven measuring tape, which emerges through an opening in the side of the fruit. The moulded plum has a rounded, naturalistic shape with defined grooves and a glossy finish. ConditionThe rigid celluloid plum retains its leaf, stalk, fly-shaped pull and woven measuring tape. The tape draws out and retracts almost completely, although the final approximately 1 cm needs to be guided gently back into the opening by hand. The body has no cracks, but the two moulded sections have opened slightly along part of the original seam, most noticeably around the tape aperture and towards the top. There is light rubbing, scratching and minor surface wear consistent with age. The fly remains attached to the tape, and the leaf and stalk are intact. As celluloid can become brittle with age, the piece and mechanism should be handled gently. DimensionsH: 5 cm x D: 5 cm EraLate Victorian to Edwardian, circa 1890–1910.
