Mid-19th Century Papier Mâché Sewing Box with Mother-of-Pearl & Gilt Detail (c.1840)A charming and decorative sewing box dating to around 1840, this elegant piece is crafted from papier mâché with richly detailed hand painting, inlaid mother-of-pearl and fine gilt detailing, typical of early Victorian taste.The hinged lid opens to reveal a lidded, compartmentalised tray lined in decorative paper, soft pink silk and velvet. Six original mother-of-pearl-topped thread reels nestle in their original compartments—an especially rare survival that adds both authenticity and display appeal.A delicate and highly collectable piece for any lover of antique sewing items, decorative boxes, or Victoriana.ConditionThe box and interior has light wear consistent with it's age.
