Description (from PDP, plain text)

Grown in miniscule amounts, this is an exceptional expression of Lanzarote's volcanic terroir, showcasing the distinctive mineral character and the ancient Diego grape variety, specifically found growing on the Juan Bello mountain in the centre of the Lanzarote island of the Canary Island. The La Diego vineyard is planted in rofe soils overlying basalt bedrock. As one would expect from volcanic island wines-there is a high influence of geological features and volcanology on these Jable de Tao wines. The Jable de Tao La Diego wine of the eponymous Jable de Tao winery, is also named after its namesake grape variety, Diego (also known as Vijaridiego in some regions). Notes of honeysuckle, tarragon and petrichor lead into a rich, profound palate with creamy texture from full malolactic fermentation, flavors of lanolin and rock salt, and a pithy mineral-etched finish. Jable de Tao’s Diego vines are approximately 100 years old and are planted on volcanic rofe soils and have a high, refreshing acidity which the variety is known for. Rofe is the Canarian term for the volcanic lapilli (small volcanic rock fragments from volcanic materials) that are characteristic of Lanzarote's vineyards. In volcanology, lapilli refers to small fragments of rock that are ejected during volcanic eruptions. Lapilli are slightly larger than "jable," which refers to the finer volcanic sand. The rofe soil cover plays a crucial role in Lanzarote viticulture, helping to retain moisture and protect vines in this arid volcanic landscape. In the winery, the must is fermented in 500L barrels, adding weight and texture to the final wine. Alc 12% Grape: Diego(also known as Vijaridiego) Media Tasting Notes Tim Atkin MW (97 points): Notes of honeysuckle, tarragon and petrichor lead into a rich, profound palate with creamy texture from full malolactic fermentation, flavors of lanolin and rock salt, and a pithy mineral-etched finish. Jamie Goode/Vin Cognito (retasted): Very smoky volcanic aromas and flavours of charred grapefruit, nut skins, preserved lemons, salt crust, broken rocks and hub caps Jable de Tao’s vines are planted on their own roots, also called “pie franco” in Spanish, and are 50 - 200 years old. These factors produce low-yielding fruit with extraordinary concentration. The Jable de Tao winery, exclusively grows native varieties such as Listán Blanco, Malvasía Volcánica and the Diego grape of this wine. The 2022s are the first ever vintage from Jable de Tao, andwe are delighted to share these exclusive wines with you. Carmelo Peña Santana, founder of Bien de Altura in Gran Canaria, is also the main man behind Jable de Tao, a new project set up in 2022 in Lanzarote. It is one of the oldest islands of the Canaries archipelago, formed around 15 million years ago, and only a mere 100 miles from the Sahara coast, it is these unique attributes that make Lanzarote a fascinating grape-growing region. The vines are grown on a mix of soils: some have a volcanic origin with finer textures locally known as “rofe” and other are sedimentary with a significant sandy marine component, aka, “jable”. This not only explains the name of the project, but also the dazzling mineral profile and marked saline finish that all the Jable de Tao wines possess. These are precise, taut, laser-cut whites, with stony cores and remarkably bright character and tension. Unique vineyards and ubique wines.
